Safety Town
Local Area Children Visit Safety Town
With ever-increasing nationwide incidents of children being injured in a variety of accidents, it is extremely important to teach good safety practices to youngsters. Hundreds of Iberville Parish kindergarten students learn about safety each year as they participated in Safety Town.

Safety Town, which is sponsored by the Iberville Parish Community Awareness Emergency Response Committee (I-CAER) and the Iberville Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness, is designed to teach the young students about emergency preparedness, chemical, fire, gun, weather, bicycle and vehicle safety.

During bicycle and vehicle safety, the students drive their “big-wheels” around the streets of the miniature Safety Town, which is complete with city buildings, railroad crossings, stop signs, and traffic lights. They are issued traffic tickets for any violations and awarded a Safety Town driver’s license once they demonstrate good safety practices. During Safety Town, the students also receive lessons on what to do when the siren sounds for bad weather or a chemical spill. Safety Town turtle mascot “Wally Wise Guy” demonstrates sheltering in place and other safety lessons.
Other safety lessons are taught on how to correctly report an emergency by calling “911” on the telephone, fire safety principles like “stop, drop and roll,” and general personal safety like not playing with guns and not talking to strangers.

I-CAER Companies Supply Volunteers Each Year
2008 Team Leader List

Safety Town will run from March 6th through March 20th(Monday through Friday). Eight volunteers are needed for each of the 10 days of “Safety Town” (88 total). All 19 I-CAER companies are being asked to supply volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer for one of the “Safety Town” days please check the attached schedule for the dates, schools, kindergarten classes and team leaders. Contact the team leader for the date you choose. If all the volunteer spots are taken for a particular day, team leaders are being asked to give special consideration to the relatives of children that are attending “Safety Town” on their day.

If you volunteer for one of the days, plan to be at Plaquemine High School by 8:30 AM. Plaquemine High is located on 59595 Belleview Road in Plaquemine. Activities start at 9:00 AM, and they are usually over by 1:30 PM. Team leaders will need your name, company name, phone number, email address and shirt size. Shirts will be given to the team leaders the week of March 3rd. You can either get your shirt from your team leader or pick it up at the Iberville Office of Emergency Preparedness (call 687-5140).

“Safety Town” is a safety program designed for kindergartners to help educate them in the proper way to cross streets, ride bikes, handle emergencies (such as home fires) and other safety related issues. Camp Fire volunteers will facilitate the program, but volunteers from area businesses are needed for each day to assist them in taking children to the restroom, helping with art project, and showing children how to ride their “big wheels” through the safety town.
